Beats from the Streets – “Verbalize” (play)
I can’t think of a more contemporary form of instrumental music than the digitoid compositions of hip-hop. This track, aptly titled “Verbalize,” is like a poem, that speaks of young hip-hop music in the early 80′s, when Afrika Bambaataa lifted bits from German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk and re-tasked them to his own creative ends. This artistic method became known by its digital name, “sampling,” now ubiquitous in hip-hop and pop music. Check this mp3 from “Hip Hop Instrumentals Volume 2″ on Rize High Records. Bleeping blip-hop bliss.

Wheedle’s Groove – “H.O.E.” (play)
Before Microsoft, Amazon, the Seattle Mariners, and The Seahawks, Seattle had a vibrant live music scene that around funk, jazz and soul music (think: Ray Charles). Most of these bands faded into the vaults of album obscurity, but a few, like Wheedle’s Groove, have been dusted off, remastered and reissued. Originally released in 1967, “H. O. E. ” is a window into the late sixties Seattle sound that sonically encapsulates all the groove based music of the time.

Pinback – “B” mp3
Since forming in 1998, San Diego’s Pinback has built their widespread indie cred and fan base on artfully composed, intelligent and highly original music. Entitled simply “B,” this track from their 2003 “Offcell” EP is a masterpiece of imagination – about as much of a journey as you can pack into a five minute piece. Hard to classify, yet readily accessible. Like a dream put to music.

Julianna Hatfield – “Peace and Love” (play)
The ever prolific Julianna Hatfield releases another collection of achingly introspective yet strangely triumphant original songs. Abandoning the indie rock bass/drums/guitar format that has been her canvas since her youthful debut in The Blake Babies, she’s also dropped all the pop production tricks to leave her sweet voice (well, plus a nice harmony overdub) and spare guitar accompaniment uncluttered and free. At once surrendering to fate, and demanding its cooperation, she opens her heart with the innocence of a child and the wisdom of an old soul on the opening track, “Peace and Love”. This is some really raw and vulnerable stuff, and it would be a cliché except she’s right, and you can tell she really means it. I’m touched.

From the time I discovered there was a world of great music seething beyond my brother’s record collection, I have spent the majority of my energy exploring music that is new to me. I grew up listening to hip-hop, electronic and jazz. By the time I was 14 I started bedroom DJing. During high school I started my perpetual mixtape quest. Eventually I amassed enough gear and dirty-used records to turn what should have been a laundry room into a home studio.
